VibeCheckAug 11, 2026Shonen Punk is peak irony reading. Practically everything about it outrageously fails. It's so abysmal, yet I just couldn't put it down. Starting with the plot, it's a mess. It starts out like a shitty harem series with lots of unexplainable bullshit. But over time the series just… keeps rebooting itself. And that was somehow before the multiverse craze became tiring. Then there's the writing. For the first several hundred-some pages, everyone spoke in TEH L33TSP3AK becasue it started in 2002. Obviously they had to. It fizzled out over time but the dialog never stopped being so fucking atrocious. You could take out a lotta scenes out of context and leave you scratching your head. Everyone just seems to talk about boobs, anime, boobs, fighting, boobs, multiverse, and did I mention boobs? It's only funny in the irony of how terrible it is. Then there's the characters. It's impossible to get invested in them becasue they're all terrible people. Chiitsu is a perverted otaku jackass who's impossible to relate to. The love interest Eva is a psychotic, clingy, and overtly lewd lady who is frustratingly obnoxious. I can't buy into their chemistry at all because early on she just claimed him as her wife and he didn't want any of that. The timeskips it includes is somehow meant to show that they've gotten closer when they don't act like it at all. And then their characters get even more ruined than they already were when the reboots and alternate universe stuff spills into it. The art style is incredibly inconsistent. Especially early on, it couldn't dedicate itself to a specific look, whether it wanted to use colors or not, etc. By the time it became somewhat more consistent, it looks like bootleg Scott Pilgrim. If I wanted to read a series about love, nerd stuff, and punk, I'D FUCKING READ SCOTT PILGRIM. And worst of all is the problematic shit. Outside of the commodification of women and intense toxic masculinity throughout, there's stuff like homophobia, abelism, and pedo shit. Chiitsu says he isn't a nonce, but it's hard not to judge the character of the author when stuff like a minor forcing Chiitsu to grope her, Chiitsu ogling over someone he doesn't realize is a minor, and a 26 year old with the body of a 12 year old with her own harem is included. What a fucking trainwreck. As I wanna make my own webcomic. This this was a prime example for me to see what NOT to do.
